about

"‘Witness’ is about seeing something fucked up and being fucked up by it,” Kile says. “Losing innocence, being corrupted, however you wanna put it. It's about being initiated into the general human scandal, the lie we agree upon in order to function socially. When we’re young, we’re blameless. Then it's something seen, not something done, that changes who you are. It happens to all of us, in one way or another. It's how we ‘grow up’.”

“Witness” is the fourth and latest single from Kile’s forthcoming solo album These Things Are Being Gathered for the Fire. Kile performed nearly every instrument on the LP, which has so far boasted three riveting singles: “Buddy Holly/Seazons,” “Holy Ghost,” and December’s “Nightbird.”

Kile says “Witness” came together with ease when he was writing material for These Things Are Being Gathered for the Fire, and the track has stood out to those who’ve heard early previews of the new LP.

“I wrote it pretty quickly,” Kile adds. “It's sort of unusual for me in that there's just this one progression the whole time, with these little variations that develop and build. Lyrically I had the last section first, and kinda wrote the rest around that. I wanted a mix of raw-sounding foundations and some more reverb-y, spacey stuff on top in the vocals and keys. The verse has a baritone guitar, buncha other guitars, acoustic and electric, all stacked playing the chords, which gives it that thick guttural sound.”

With "These Things Are Being Gathered for the Fire" set for a spring release, “Witness” helps crystallize some of the lyrical themes that run through the 10-track album. “I think thematically, ‘Witness’ follows threads that run throughout the record -- innocence, guilt, love. It draws on some of the religious language and metaphor that I've always found compelling, and can't seem to escape.”

"These Things Are Being Gathered for the Fire" Drops in April 2021.

lyrics

Somebody put me in the picture
From wherever I was prior, before
To walk among the whispers
Through a memory, a corridor

Where I see that I want something
That I didn’t want before
I’ve seen it wanted by another
And that made me want it more

Ah ha to be the witness
To the secret and the memory
I was staring at the action
Now the action is a part of me
I swear I didn’t do nothing
But there ain’t nobody accusing you
Of the crime you’re witness to

Somebody call another witness
And put his hand over the Bible
Vividly they saw forgiveness
Quietly they chose survival
Tried to look at the big picture
But it just keeps on getting bigger
And now soon love will hide us all
